About
Rachael Comer (b. 1996) is an installation artist, sculptor and arts events producer based in Seattle, WA. Their work focuses on girlhood, religion, queer identity and sex work. Rachael is a 2024 resident artist at Actualize, recipient of the ARTS Cultural Producer grant and works to expand access and equity in community as an Arts & Culture steering committee member with the Downtown Seattle Association and the Urban Land Institute.
Born in Washington state, Rachael’s art is heavily influenced by formative years spent in San Angelo, West Texas and the cake and coffee served round the church table. Many years after leaving and coming to Seattle, Rachael has brought with them a tradition of cake to share no longer in the spirit of a last meal, but to celebrate the life we have now and can continue to enjoy together.
Since beginning her career with confections and then sculptural cakes, an exploration of deeper themes began with sugar as her primary medium, now mainly for large scale installations and sculptures such as 24hrs Sweet (2022) and Amina & Amaja (2024).
Whether an edible creation or a sculpture, sweetness is proven to be more than salve; a glistening representation of the indelible beauty of strength.
